OpenCorporates data used to expose corruption in Myanmar
5th November 2015

OpenCorporates, the Level39 member which maintains the largest open database of companies in the world, has helped uncover a network of military elites, drug lords and crony companies controlling the multi-billion dollar jade industry in Myanmar.
Global Witness, an international NGO which exposes the economic networks behind conflict used open company data, collected, collated and published by OpenCorporates, to help substantiate information on the real owners of major jade businesses.
In a white paper released by OpenCorporates, you can read how not only was it critical that OpenCorporates had this information but it was machine-readable data, available via an API, essential for it to be used to discover hidden connections between key players in the jade industry.
